THE CELTIC TRAIL
The Celtic Trail, Sustrans route 4, is part of the visionary National Cycle Network and takes you along 220 miles of the most diverse scenery in Wales, from the eastern 'Gateway to Wales' at the Severn Bridge to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in the west. It also joins the Taff Trail Cycle Path which runs vertically through the Valleys, to Merthyr Tydfil in the north of the region, and beyond.
Cycling the Celtic Trail is an exhilarating and healthy way to see the Valleys and experience the uniqueness of the Welsh culture, history and physical beauty. Travelling through forests, mountains and green valleys, famous as past industrial heartlands, you will discover a new country beyond recognition and enjoy idyllic rural retreats that are missed by many car-borne vistors.
In the Valleys area you can enjoy a gentle cycle through Sirhowy Country Park from 14 Locks Vistor Center. Or join the Taff Trail and follow a section of the Sustrans sister route, 'Lôn Las Ctmru', at the crossroads of Wales' two National Cycle Network routes. once on the Taff Trail you then have the option of visiting the Welsh Capital city of Cardiff or the beautiful Breacon Beacons National Park.
At Pontypridd mountain bikers can pick up the challenging 'High Level' route, climbing to a height of 600m on top of the Rhigos mountain before dropping down into the Neath valley 25 miles to the west! Whilst the more leisurely cyclist will revel in the tranquil rides on offer in the Ogmore Valley, Bedford Park and Margam Park. And if it's the sea you seek to head to Aberavon promenade and the fine views offered over Swansea Bay and the Gower.
